The Cubic Mapping Contest has started!
The theme of event:
Let's go back to the day Cube 1 existed, and go edit old-skool!
The map's geometry stands at the centre of this challenge, because you have to create a map where curves aren't allowed at all.
Why no curves? Because Cube Engine (2) isn't great for creating curves anyways (duh, look at the name?).
Why only cubes? Because if you could use the disadvantage of the engine, as advantage, by not trying to create expensive curve-like geometry.
The rules of event:
Create 1 map especially for capture the flag. Adding any other mode to it is at your own risk but can have consequences when people vote.
Size doesn't matter, but there's a maximum of 24 players wandering around on the map and a minimum of 6 (like for clanwars).
You have 60 days to create the entire map from scratch. This should be enough for a ctf map. Why not just 30 days again? Because as you've maybe noticed on the 30-day mapping challenge, the ctf-maps were failing in such short time.
The actual date of starting this challenge:
- Saturday the 22th of October 2011 at 0:00 (GMT+1, timezones will be checked)
The actual date of ending this challenge:
- Tuesday the 20th of December 2011 (and so do you start on that date and end on that date!).
Why this decision? Because that make the contest end up close before Christmas, Where it seems like most people have time for gaming (so for voting maps also).
You need to post or upload a screenshot or the .ogz-fileof your map at least once a week (at last every saturday).
Allowings:
- Any flat surface (only from all sides of a cube), but also diagonal surfaces are allowed, with the next individual requirements:
- The surface isn't connected to any other diagonal surface from another angle.
- The other surface which is had the same specific angle as the connected surface, is just mirrored against the other surface.
- The surfaces aren't in the "shell" of the map (so just into the wall, which you clearly can't see when running trough the map), for creating diagonal surfaces.
- 2 surfaces in 1 cube which "act" like a curve, as long as they aren't connected to another diagonal surface of another angle. (also for this one, look at the screenshots for better explanation).
- Custom textures, sounds, mapmodels, shaders are allowed to use, but try to stick a bit to the default stuff in Sauerbraten.
- Blend brushing is, even using the round brushes are allowed.
- Textures which have round prints in them are allowed, not recommended tough.
- SVN version, but if you do so be sure that you note in an included .txt-file how to get the SVN version (to prevent noobs can only judge on the screenshot).
- Editing in teams is allowed, but every player can only be in 1 team (to prevent people try to double their chance of winning), so think wise before you choose someone.
- To apply even after the challenge already started.
Disallowings:
- Diagonal surfaces which are bended (so the cube isn't square-shaped and flat anymore, or just 1 triangle which is flat).
- Mapmodels which carry curves in their geometry aren't allowed. Any other forms of geometry in mapmodels are allowed.
- Diagonal surfaces that haven't been notified if they are allowed.
- Copying parts of other maps isn't allowed. Just start from scratch.
I still need to think about how I (or we), set up this contest, but to me it sounds like a pretty tough challenge!
Applying to participate with this contest is easy, here a few steps:
1. Create an account on this website.
2. Put a thread in the "Submission" board (which is over here: quadmapcontest.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=submissions&action=display&thread=131), which includes:
- The event which you are participating for.
- The name of your team.
- Which members will be in your team.
Here are some screenshots of the allow- and disallowments (beware, not all rules are included into those screenshots!):
