This ere magic challenge didn't quite go as expected. We got lots of entrants, but not as many finished entries. Can't blame anybody, as I didn't finish either. Anywho... Let us start simple. An entire map is a large jump, and there is no baseline or common ground between contestants other than the timeline and the new map they start with. ( Tell us more, oh ye Master of the obvious! ) I was thinking of a simple little thing that we would run, and keep running, just for fun, with no time constraints. Every two weeks, a thread would be made with an image posted. For anybody who wishes to try; their job is to try to recreate what they see in the image, as best they can in the game. This means a good sense of scale, adequate detailing and texturing, along with lighting so as to match the feeling of the image. Their work need only contain what is visible in the image, but may have more to fill in the empty spaces. When the editor feels satisfied with his or her work, all that need be done would be to reply to the thread with an image of the work ( preferably at the same angle ) and the map file. There would be no definite time span, but a new image thread would be made every two weeks. The threads would be numbered, and the old ones would be kept up. Each new image would likely be a different theme, with different subject matter, with a description if possible. Give me thoughts. Or don't.

It isn't anymore, but I'm very sure it was before (like on the "rules and explanation"-topic)...

I think it sounds like a nice challenge, but I don't think the 30-day-mapping challenge shouldn't be forgotten (when will te voting close???).
The images shoulnd't be too hard to create and there should be calculated that (most) round shapes aren't possible to create inside sauerbraten.
Also, mapmodels should be allowed, but not overwhelming. As example, A participant has created the intire (or like half of) image by using another modeling program (like 3D Studio Max), wich lead to better results. In that case, you could actually say the geometry wich really leaves the mark into the map, is the modeling program, not Sauerbraten. My opinion is that such thing shouldn't be allowed.

I'd *like* to say, "No Models!" But I know not everybody will agree, so it will be as stated; Any models used must be for secondary details, and the majority of the work must be done using the octree. In layman's terms, you can have em, but keep em minimal. As for the mapping challenge ratings... The poll will close when.... I feel we've had a sufficient number of votes. Or sometime before that. Or after. It would be preferable to have at least 29 votes, because that's a nice prime number.

Also, not only an image should be included as proper entry.
My opinion is that the .ogz file should be included, because this tackles the usage of photoshop or gimp (or any similar program) wich participants could use to make it look more similar than their creation in Sauerbraten, as the original image.
Another point is, what about 2 sections?
1 for realistic entries and 1 for abstract entries?
This tackles the conflict of abstract and realistic views (since some people like abstact views more than others).

Ahem, heheheh.
"When the editor feels satisfied with his or her work, all that need be done would be to reply to the thread with an image of the work ( preferably at the same angle ) and the map file."
As for the real and abstract entries, that sounds like a great idea.
